PRESS RELEASE Commemorative Lecture for Mariano Ponce to be held MANILA – The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) in cooperation with the University of Santo Tomas (UST) will hold a commemorative lecture in observance of the 150th birth anniversary of Mariano Ponce on February 21, 2013, 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Thomas Aquinas Research Center (TARC) Auditorium, UST-Graduate School, Espana, Manila. The program will start with Prof. Clarita D.L. Carillo, Ph.D., UST, Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs welcoming the guests and participants, while NHCP Chair Dr. Maria Serena I. Diokno will give a message. Noted historians will talk about the life and crusade of Mariano Ponce for necessary socio-political reforms in the Philippines during the Spanish colonial period. Dr. Ma. Luisa T. Camagay, Professor of the Department of History-University of the Philippines will talk on “Ponce, the Reformist and Revolutionary,” Dr. Lino L. Dizon, Director of Center for Tarlaqueño Studies will talk about “Ponce, the Folklorist,” Dr. Paul A. Dumol, Associate Professor of the University of Asia and the Pacific will discuss “The Historiography of Mariano Ponce,” and Dr. Francis A. Gealogo, Chair of the History Department of Ateneo de Manila will lecture on “Ponce, the Asianist.” Dr. Augusto De Viana, Chair of the UST Department of History will provide the closing remarks. The NHCP is a national government agency mandated to promote and preserve Philippine historical heritage through research, information dissemination, conservation, including the marking of historic sites and structures, and the maintenance and administration of national shrines and landmarks. |
