PRESS RELEASE:

NHCP unveils the Pook na Pinaglibingan ng Labimpitong Martir sa Koronadal historical marker

KORONADAL CITY - The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) unveils on Friday, 4 January 2013, the historical marker  “Pook na Pinaglibingan ng Labimpitong Martir sa Koronadal ” in Koronadal City, South Cotabato.

During the Commonwealth period, the government declared portion of Koronadal as settlement areas administered by the National Settlement Land Administration headed by Gen. Paulino Santos. These areas became centers of guerilla resistance to the Japanese occupation during World War II. This provoked Japanese cruelty against the townspeople intensifying the conflict between the guerillas and the Japanese.

On 24 November 1942, a number of USAFFE soldiers led by Lt. Alfredo Garingo attacked the Japanese at the NLSA warehouse, killing one Japanese soldier. The Japanese retaliated by rounding up civilian residents of Koronadal, killing 17 of them including Gervacio Antipolo, overseer of the barrio.  The district’s supervising overseer, Alberto Morrow and his driver Santiago Odi, committed suicide when they failed to persuade the Japanese to stop the killings.

The bodies of the 17 victims were buried in the same spot where  they were killed, now located within the present Koronadal Central Elementary School 1 (KCES I) campus.

Organized by the NHCP in cooperation with the City Government of Koronadal, the unveiling ceremony will be led by NHCP Executive Director Ludovico D. Badoy and Mayor Peter B. Miguel, MD, FPSO-HNS. They will be assisted by Vice-Mayor Eliorde U. Ogena, the Sangguniang Panlungsod of Koronadal and Mr. Nestor C. Camiring,  Principal of Mababang Paaralang Central ng Koronadal I. The marker shall be officially turned over to the City Government of Koronadal to be signified by the signing of the Certificate of Transfer.

The NHCP is the national government agency mandated to promote and preserve Philippine history and heritage through research, information dissemination, conservation, including the marking of historic sites and structures, and the maintenance and administration of national shrines, and landmarks.
