PRESS RELEASE Araw ng Kagitingan to be commemorated BATAAN – President Benigno S. Aquino III will lead the nation in commemorating the Araw ng Kagitingan rites at Mt. Samat Shrine, Pilar, Bataan at 9:00 in the morning. This year’s theme is “Veterans: Catalysts of Genuine and Lasting Change.”
The President will be joined by Japanese Ambassador Toshinao Urabe and Deputy Chief of Mission of the United States of America Ms. Leslie A. Bassett. Bataan Governor Enrique T. Garcia, Jr. and National Historical Commission of the Philippines Chair Dr. Maria Serena I. Diokno will give the welcome remarks and overview of the historical event respectively. President Aquino will award the winners of the oratorical, painting and essay writing contests. He will be assisted by Department of Education Sec. Armin A. Luistro, President of the VFP Sons and Daughters Association, Inc. Percianita G. Racho and Philippine Veterans Affairs Office Administrator Ernesto G. Carolina. Messages will be delivered by Ambassador Katsura and Ms. Bassett. Department of National Defense Sec. Voltaire Gazmin will introduce the President. On April 9, 1942, the troops of Bataan led by their commander, Maj. Gen. Edward P. King, Jr. surrendered to the Japanese. The Filipino and American soldiers were forced to march 90 miles under the heat of the sun from Bataan to Camp O’ Donell in Tarlac. Many died even before they could reach the Camp. The NHCP is a national government agency mandated to promote and preserve Philippine historical heritage through research, information dissemination, conservation, including the marking of historic sites and structures, and the maintenance and administration of national shrines and landmarks. |
